Sport has long played an important role in the social life and identity of Hambledon, nowhere more famously than in the village’s historic association with cricket. During the eighteenth century Hambledon became known far beyond Hampshire through the celebrated Hambledon Club and matches played on Broadhalfpenny Down, regarded as one of the birthplaces of modern cricket.

Alongside cricket, the village supported a wider sporting culture that reflected both rural traditions and community life, bringing together residents through recreation, competition and shared local identity across generations.
